In honor of Black History month this article is dedicated to an amazing woman who I am so honored to have known for over 20 years. Crystal J. Lucky holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania (1999), an M.A. in African-American Studies from Yale University (1989), and a B.A. in English and Communications from the University of Pennsylvania (1985). Dr. Crystal J. Lucky is Associate Professor of English at Villanova University, where she has taught since 1996, and is the former director of the Africana Studies Program. She is one of our own and we salute her history making accomplishment!
In 2005, Dr. Crystal Lucky was the first person of color to be tenured in the English Department at Villanova University. She currently works as a Diversity Consultant with teachers and administrators in both public and private secondary schools on curriculum enhancement and multi-cultural community building. Finally, she is an ordained elder in the Church of the Living God International, Inc. and serves as the Pastor of the Sword of the Spirit Church in Lansdowne, PA. She has been married for over twenty-five years and has one son.
Dr. Lucky has recently published a new book, A Mysterious Life and Calling is the autobiography of Charlotte Levy Riley, who was born into slavery but after emancipation achieved a fulfilling career as a preacher in the South Carolina Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, schoolteacher, and civil servant. Although several nineteenth-century accounts by black preaching women in the northern states are known, this is the first memoir by a black woman preaching in the South, both before and after the Civil War, to be discovered.
We salute Dr. Crystal Lucky, Woman of God, Educator, Author, Leader, Wife, Mother
and an Inspiration to us all!
