3 ways I learned to love my color

Color is one of those interesting words in the English language that has come to have several different meanings. We can use color to describe mood, emotional state and/or personality. According to Dr. Carol Ritberger — a world-famous behavioral psychologist and author — there are 4 distinct personality types in the world: Red, Orange, Yellow, and Green. We also use color to refer to our racial identity, and of course we use color to describe the physical characteristics of objects around us.

So what “color” am I referring to when I say I have learned to love my color?  I am referring to my bright personality! According to Dr. Carol Ritberger’s test I have an ORANGE personality! This means that I am a “let’s just get along” kind of person. I am kind, cooperative, and always put others first. I  appreciate order and organization, and I respond well to rules. All of these things seem to capture my personality pretty well but over time, I have found that these great traits were also holding me back from really embracing who I was as a person and just loving “ME” for “ME”.

Now, I am not saying I have low self-esteem or anything like that but like every other woman out there, I struggled with feelings of insecurity, doubt and worrying about what people thought about me.  It was an accumulation of the Little comments – “Oh here she comes, Ms. Diva”, “Oh she always has to be grand”, etc.

It was NOBODY’S fault but my own, I was allowing myself to be stifled. Through prayer and asking the Lord for help I realized that my need to be “kind and easy-going” was also a hindrance because I slowly allowed my “true color” and brightness to be dimmed by other people.

Well, it’s a new year and I have decided with the help of the Lord that I am going to continue to:

  1.  Be the most brilliant color in the box (I can’t help what other people think or how they feel, I am going to be my bright and colorful self)
  2. Find color in darkness (try to find the positive things in life and in people and help bring color & life to those around me)
  3. Remember that without a little rain you won’t have a rainbow ( I won’t be discouraged by the rain, but pray and wait for the Lord to give me a sign (the rainbow)
